Tamal Saka is dedicated to developing sea kayakers with safe paddling skills, basic seamanship and knowledge of the ocean environment. Our courses are designed for those interested in learning sea kayaking basics or improving their skill level, as well as for those who intend to be responsible for others on the water. Tamal Saka instructors are sensitive to the challenges of learning, and we maintain small group sizes in all of our courses to ensure that you will receive individualized and personalized instruction.

Introduction to Sea Kayaking
This course gives you a foundation to start kayaking safely. We begin with an orientation to kayaks, gear and a variety of paddling strokes. We then practice paddling, ultimately learning wet exits and re-entry techniques. Our day is rounded out with an introduction to tide logs and charts.
Cost: $95. (min. 4 participants) Every Saturday
Private classes by appointment. Cost: $125. per person. Time: 9-4.

Intermediate Sea Kayaking
In this class we go to the next level of learning! We will learn more strokes with variations while still practicing our basics at the start of our day. We then progress into more types of rescues, scenarios, and start learning bracing, an invaluable skill for all kayakers. Basic navigation skills such as ³ranging² and ³drift² will also be introduced. (Pre-req.: Intro to Sea Kayaking classes or equivalent).

Advanced Sea Kayaking
Comfortable with the fundamentals and interested in boosting your skill in handling rough water conditions? Solid now with a variety of skills, let¹s paddle at the north tower of the Golden Gate! Learn about tide-rips, currents, surf, shipping lanes, VHF radios and a host of other skills to move into the open ocean. Trip planning as well as risk assessment will be thoroughly explored. (Pre-req.: Intro and Intermediate to Sea Kayaking classes or equivalent)
Cost: $95.

Surf Kayaking
Surf kayaking is a great way to ride waves and to fine tune your strokes and braces. Using open deck kayaks, this course will teach the skills necessary to read wave shapes and dynamics, enter and exit the surf zone safely and negotiate beach conditions. (Pre-req.: Intro to Sea Kayaking class or equivalent).

Sea Kayak Weekend
This two-day expedition class is the intro and intermediate classes combined, while adding expeditionary skills, some navigation, seamanship and minimum impact camping using Leave No Trace principles. It will prepare you to safely venture out on your own.
Cost: $175.

Eskimo Rolling
Learn the ultimate rescue! With practice it's possible to ³roll² your kayak after a capsize. This course is for anyone wanting to become a confident paddler in rivers, surf or open ocean conditions. The students/instructor ratio is kept small (2:1) to ensure an intimate learning environment. Classes are two hours long, call for details. (Pre-req: Intro to Sea Kayaking or equivalent.)
Cost: $60. Per session, or $30./hr.

Navigation Clinic
This 4 hour clinic is taught half by day and half at night. First we will learn about a variety of compasses, how to use them, and how to calculate bearings from a chart. After dinner, we¹ll calculate a course and paddle it in the dark using our new found skills!
